This technology provides the doctor and the patient with comfort, speed, and accuracy in all stages of treatment, and the accuracy rate in treatment reaches about one tenth of a millimeter. The idea of the Gamma Knife is the latest modern technology in the field of brain surgery and the treatment of tumors and brain diseases. Gamma-type beams to the tumor or the target inside the brain so that they are specific for destroying the tumor and safe for the healthy brain tissue adjacent and surrounding the tumor.
The Gamma Knife treatment mechanism for brain tumors and diseases depends on defining the outer borders of the tumor by magnetic imaging, CT, or 3D arterial catheterization (Stereotactic Imaging), i. Therapeutic (Gamma Plan) where we direct focused beams of gamma type to the target or the tumor inside the brain from (192) therapeutic radial tubes, in one session, with extreme accuracy, without causing any damage to the healthy brain tissue surrounding the tumor
The patient will be fully conscious during the treatment, which takes place on the morning of the treatment day, and he will leave in the evening of the same day, and he will be able to carry out his usual activities the next day.
Gamma Knife treatment steps
- Installing the stereotactic device on the patient's head using local anesthesia while the patient is fully conscious.
- 3D color magnetic resonance imaging
- Stereotactic Brain MRI with Contrast (Cerebral Angiography)
- Transferring the three-dimensional images to the Gamma Knife computer and conducting the accurate treatment plan for therapeutic radiation doses - (Gamma Plan)
- Bringing the patient and placing him on the table with the Gamma Knife device and the patient in full consciousness and giving him the therapeutic radiological doses - without causing any pain or even without feeling it.
- In order to successfully complete the administration of therapeutic radiation doses, we remove the stereotactic device from the patient’s head and discharge him from the hospital with a detailed report on the treatment procedures and the future plan to follow up on the case. The patient can return to his usual work the next day
Gamma Knife treatment results
Three hundred thousand cases so far. The results were excellent compared to the traditional microscopic surgery, which is characterized by the absence of anesthesia, wounds, bleeding and infections, while avoiding the complications of traditional surgery. With regard to meningiomas and cranial nerve tumors such as acoustic neuroma and pituitary tumors, the success rate in controlling these tumors reached 92% during The three years following treatment either shrink the tumor or transform it into a silent mass.
Also, the success rate of closing congenital arteriovenous connections treated with Gamma Knife reaches 90% during the three years following treatment. In the case of treatment of trigeminal neuralgia, which progressed and became unresponsive to treatment, the success rate reaches 90%, whether by controlling the pain in whole or in part, and improvement occurs gradually during the three months following treatment.
